How We Choose the Companies on Our Lists

Plain answers to two questions you should ask any directory: how did these companies get here, and who pays for this site?

Our Selection Criteria

Every page lists up to three companies. We pick them using the same checks for every city:

  • Public ratings. We look at each company's Google rating and, where available, other review sites. We favor companies with consistently strong ratings.
  • Review volume. A 5.0 rating from four reviews tells you less than a 4.8 from two hundred. We weigh how many customers have reviewed a company, not just the score.
  • Local presence. We favor companies with an office in or near the area, or that list the community in their published service area.
  • Emergency availability. Every listed company advertises 24/7 emergency response.
  • Track record. Years in business and a stable local operation count in a company's favor.

Where we can, we include a mix of locally owned independents and local offices of national brands, so you can compare.

What We Don't Do

We don't inspect jobs, and we don't verify each company's license or insurance ourselves. That's why every page tells you to check before hiring. In Louisiana, you can look up any contractor on the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors website. Home repairs over $7,500 require a Home Improvement registration, and mold remediation projects of $7,500 or more require a Mold Remediation license.

How We Make Money

This site is free for homeowners. To pay for it, we may be compensated by listed contractors. That can happen in two ways:

  • Sponsored listings. A company may pay to appear in a separate card above our three picks. That card is always labeled “Sponsored.”
  • Referral fees. A company may pay us when a call or appointment comes through our site.

Here is our rule: paying us never changes the three companies we pick or their order. A sponsor appears in addition to those picks, never instead of one. If a company we already list becomes a paying partner, we'll say so on its card.

Phone numbers: Some phone numbers on this site may be tracking numbers that forward directly to the listed company. They let us measure which pages are helping people. You'll still reach the company you called.

Keeping Lists Current

We review every list at least every few months and whenever we hear a company has changed its number, moved, closed or stopped serving an area. Each page shows when it was last updated.

If a listed company treated you badly, if a number is wrong, or if you own a company you think belongs on a list, contact us. We read every message.
