Gonzales is the largest city in Ascension Parish and calls itself the Jambalaya Capital of the World. It also sits in some of the flattest, wettest country in Louisiana, between the Mississippi River to the west and the Amite River basin to the north and east. That geography shapes the kind of water problems Gonzales homeowners call about.
Heavy rain that falls faster than ditches and canals can carry it away is the most common outside threat. When the Amite River and its connected waterways run high, backwater can push into low neighborhoods and stay for days. In the August 2016 flood, nearly one-third of all homes in Ascension Parish took on water after a levee along the Amite River was overtopped.
Gonzales also has a mix of older homes near the center of town and newer subdivisions on its edges. Older homes tend to have aging plumbing and roofs that have been patched over the years, while newer homes often hide leaks inside slab foundations and attics. Either way, the warning signs are the same: stains on ceilings, soft spots in flooring, swollen baseboards, and a musty smell that doesn't go away. Catching those early keeps a small repair from turning into a full restoration.
Mold can start growing on wet drywall and carpet pad within 24 to 48 hours, and Gonzales summers make that window feel even shorter. Opening windows on a muggy day often adds moisture rather than removing it. Commercial dehumidifiers and air movers, set up the same day, are what keep a leak from becoming a mold job.
While you wait for help, shut off the water at the main valve, keep people away from wet outlets, photograph every wet room, and move rugs, electronics and papers somewhere dry.
Sudden damage from inside the home, like a burst pipe, is usually covered by homeowners insurance. Rising water from outside is not; it needs a separate flood policy, and new policies usually have a 30-day wait. Homes inside city limits get rebuilding permits through the City of Gonzales, while homes outside the city go through Ascension Parish.
Before repairs start, check the company on the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors website. Home repairs over $7,500 require a Home Improvement registration, jobs over $75,000 require a Residential license, and mold remediation projects of $7,500 or more require a separate Mold Remediation license.
SERVPRO of Ascension Parish serves the whole parish. Paul Davis Restoration lists Gonzales in its service area, and Clear Restoration serves Greater Baton Rouge. All offer 24/7 response.

Mold can begin growing within 24 to 48 hours on wet materials, so professional drying should start the same day.
