Baker sits just north of Baton Rouge, and the August 2016 flood hit it hard. According to FEMA figures, just over 3,600 homes in Baker flooded, and about 40 percent of those took on more than two feet of water. Shelters at city hall and Baker High School had to be moved when water seeped in, and the police chief alone made more than 400 rescues by boat. Baker High School didn't reopen in its rebuilt building until 2024.
That history still shapes the city. Many homes were gutted and rebuilt, and many residents now know their neighborhoods can flood even outside a mapped flood zone.
Water damage after a flood like 2016 can linger for years if a home wasn't fully dried before it was rebuilt. If you bought a Baker home that flooded before, or you notice a musty smell, warped floors or stains that keep coming back, have it checked with a moisture meter and thermal camera. A restoration company can tell you whether you're dealing with a new leak or old moisture trapped in walls, and that difference decides how much has to be opened up.
Stop the water at the main valve and keep everyone away from wet outlets and cords. Photograph every wet room and the source of the leak before anything is moved. Then call a restoration company; mold can begin growing within 24 to 48 hours, so drying should start the same day.
Report the claim to your insurance company. Sudden water damage from inside the home is usually covered. Rising floodwater is not; it needs a separate flood policy, and new policies usually have a 30-day waiting period.
After regional storms, door-knockers and out-of-state crews arrive fast. Choose a company with a local office, written estimates and daily drying logs. Rebuilding work inside city limits usually needs a permit through the City of Baker.
Before repairs start, check the company on the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors website. Home repairs over $7,500 require a Home Improvement registration, jobs over $75,000 require a Residential license, and mold remediation projects of $7,500 or more require a separate Mold Remediation license.
